I’ve never been a fan of the Real Housewives shows, but it looks like Bravo will snare me in its scandalous web with the upcoming Southern Charm. Described as a “fast-paced, drama-filled docu-series”, the show follows 6 singles “behind the walls of Charleston, South Carolina’s most aristocratic families to reveal a world of exclusivity, money and scandal that goes back generations.” It looks like only one of the 6 people featured is a Charleston native (a former state treasurer who resigned to face drug charges and serve a 10 month prison sentence), so will be intriguing to see if they actually snag invites to party with the upper crust.
Charleston paper The Post and Courier aired the concerns of local residents this summer, revealing, “Rumor has it some old families forbade their offspring to appear on a show they assume will ridicule their way of life.” Their suspicions seem valid as the show dubs Charleston, “the playground for men who never want to grow up”. I imagine neither Charlestonians nor Charleston tourism boosters will be adopting this tagline. But it certainly fits in with the trailer teasing hookups, drunken boat parties, and a paternity test.
The Charleston old guard may balk at the boozy behavior portrayed on the show, but Southern Charm should prove irresistible to reality TV fans and Southerners preparing to be horrified. The show premieres tonight on Bravo at 10pm EST.
