We spent a gorgeous weekend on the North Carolina coast to celebrate a friend’s wedding at Wrightsville Beach near Wilmington. As pink, orange and red hues streaked the evening sky over the sound on Friday, the wedding party and guests posed for photos at the rehearsal dinner venue. Saturday brought weather made for an outdoor wedding, complete with pelicans and seagulls flying in formation over the beachfront ceremony.
I’ve been to a lot of weddings, but this was the first where the groom and friends jumped into the chilly sound mid-reception (a longtime family tradition). Several of the bridesmaids took the plunge too, while guests lined the pier to watch the scene. The dance party continued after the swimming, as another gorgeous sunset reflected off the water. We don’t go out dancing too often in Charlotte, so stayed up late as the DJ cranked out 90’s hip-hop and 80’s hair band tunes.
We stayed at our family beach house near Figure Eight Island for the weekend, but many of the wedding guests stayed at the Blockade Runner, an iconic Wrightsville Beach resort. We waited for a cab in the lobby after the wedding, noting the beachy chic decor (the resort was renovated in 2013 for its 50th anniversary).
It was hard to leave as the beautiful weather continued into Sunday, so will be thinking of these sunsets until our next trip.
