Queen City in the Wild

Deer checking us out

We moved to a new house in Charlotte in April, just a few miles away in the area around South Park mall. In our old house, the resident wildlife consisted of squirrels and baby birds hatching outside of our front door every spring. In our new neighborhood, we’ve been surprised by the host of new creatures parading through our backyard. In the spring and summer, the sight of bouncing bunnies delighted our daughter and tortured our dog.

About a week ago, we woke up to see four deer milling around the backyard. They (or four different deer) returned the following day, unfazed as I observed them from the stoop. Two more returned yesterday, watching me skeptically before sauntering into our next door neighbor’s yard.

I’ve never had the desire to live in the country, but am happy our new house attracts some cute four-legged visitors.
